Venice: A Maritime Republic
The Palaces along the Grand Canal date from the High Renaissance of Venice (approximately 1450-1650).  The lecture focuses on the enormous wealth made by the merchants of Venice.  As patrons, they commissioned works of art to signify their power and status to the world.  Slide is presented to enhance the social history.
Since most cruises stop at various ports along the Dalmatian coast, a brief history of former Yugoslavia and Croatia is presented as well.

Rome: History, Art and Architecture

This lecture will introduce the traveler to the important sites of Rome, both ancient and baroque.  A cultural history is presented to familiarize you with significant ancient sites, and the importance of the patrons who supported the many monuments and churches that dot the streets of Rome.  Photographs will highlight the Roman Forum, the Coliseum, the Piazza Navonna, and St. Peter’s.   The works of the famous sculptor, Bernini, are highlighted.

Greco-Roman Sites in Southern Italy
The best preserved ancient Greek and Roman sites are found in southern Italy at Pompeii, and in Sicily at Agrigento, Selinunte, Syracuse, and Taormina.  Slides will be shown of these locations.  These archeological sites reveal a fascinating social and political life of ancient peoples.  Temple architecture is analyzed in detail, as well as sculpture, murals, and mosaics.  The Roman site at Piazza Armerina (4th cent.) (near Taormina) is presented revealing a lavish and extremely well preserved palace in its entirety.

Rome: Ancient, Baroque and Modern
A brief introduction of Rome reveals a complex cultural history.
Rome represents one of the most outstanding civilizations of the ancient world.
It has made contributions to the western world into the present time.
This lecture focuses on a description of the ancient ruins including the Coliseum, and The Roman Forum.  These archeological sites reveal the lifestyle and social system of its peoples.  During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Rome witnessed the enormous expansion of its churches and public squares (the Baroque era).  Photographs are presented of some of the most well known artworks including those  of Michelangelo and Bernini.

Alexandria: A Lost City Re-Discovered
(Cleopatra & The Ptolemy Dynasty)

In 1995, the ancient Ptolemic city of Alexandria was brought up from the bottom of the sea.  These ancient statues and monuments re-affirmed the grandeur of the Ptolemies.  A cultural history is presented on the founding of the city of Alexandria, and slides highlight its important ancient sites.  Cleopatra’s life is discussed, and you can determine the “truth” or “myth” about her.

Lebanon and Syria: Ancient Sites of Baalbek and Palmyra

After a brief history of Lebanon and Syria, and its Phoenician heritage, this lecture explores the ancient sites of Baalbek and Palmyra.  These archeological sites are extremely well preserved, and can reveal to us the social and political life of ancient peoples.  Photographs will highlight the Temples of Bacchus and Jupiter at Baalbek, and the Temple of Baal at Palmyra.  Other temples, monuments, theaters, will reveal the sophisticated artistic heritage of these once grand and powerful cities connecting trade routes from the east to the Mediterranean.

Greco Roman Sites:  Ephesus and Rhodes

Two well-known sites in the Greco Roman Empires are analyzed in terms of their art and architecture.  City states were fiercely independent from one another each having their own coinage and constitution.  They all shared a fundamental urban center comprised of a marketplace, a theater, houses, and religious temples.  Slides will be shown to enhance the presentation of the sites, and special attention is given to the details in architecture – a result of extraordinary excavation and restoration programs.

Adriatic: Land and Its People (Trieste/Croatia)
The history of north eastern Italy, and of present-day Croatia is presented showing its influence by neighboring European powers.  From ancient times, to the Hapsburg Empire and events from WWI, this area has been wrought with political conflict.  Its people and cultures are diverse, and reflects both eastern and western influence.  The current beauty and economy of Croatia is presented.
